Magnesium

What Are Magnesium Alloys?

Magnesium alloys are lightweight metal materials engineered by combining magnesium with alloying elements such as aluminum, zinc, manganese and silicon. By adjusting their chemical composition and processing conditions, different magnesium alloys can be developed to achieve specific combinations of strength, ductility, castability, machinability and thermal performance.

With a density of approximately 1.74 g/cm³, magnesium is significantly lighter than both aluminum and steel. This exceptionally low density makes magnesium alloys particularly attractive for applications where reducing component weight is a key design objective. They also offer a favorable strength-to-weight ratio, good machinability, effective vibration damping and thermal conductivity.

Magnesium alloys are generally divided into wrought and cast alloys, depending on their manufacturing route and intended application. Common alloy families include the AZ, AM and AS series, with each family offering different performance characteristics. For example, some grades are designed for forming and structural applications, while others are developed for casting and improved performance at elevated temperatures.
